Last taper before Miwok

At the trailhead - which sums up how I feel about tapering
For our last taper run before the Miwok100k we had planned on running Larch Mountain. I had been exhausted all week, so being overly paranoid about getting sick and over doing it the week before our longest and possibly hardest run to date, I decided to stick to Forest Park for our taper run. 

 I pulled out my Forest Park map and cobbled together a ~14 mile route, with a few hills to make it tough but not enough to over do it.

Overall the run felt great to me and it was over way too fast. That is one of the problems with tapering, the short distances feel great and you want to keep going, but if you are smart you don't. We were smart this time, I can't say that for all our "tapers". Since Miwok has what we consider a pretty aggressive cutoff time, we are trying to play it pretty smart during our taper, not that it is always easy.

    Hopefully it isn't our routes getting you lost in Forest Park. :)

    We have been wanting to run a 50 mile race in Alaska, any suggestions?

Well hello there — is anyone still reading this thing? Despite not really blogging at all in the last two years, we are still running and having lots of adventures. And, unsurprisingly, a lot has happened in that time. Torres del Paine Susan got divorced, is solo parenting, adopted a few new cats, lost her job at Nike, and is leaning into some much-needed “me” time. We sold our house in Portland and moved to Bellingham in February (2025). I quit my very stable job and joined a startup. I had a birthday and officially aged into a new race category. I also started outrigger canoeing. Susan, Cedar, and I also welcomed a few more humans and dogs into our pack — Billy (dog), his human Rachael, Miriam, and Kellen. Mt. St. Helens Circumnavigation

View of the mountain and the Toutle River from a scree switchback We completed the Loowit trail, 34 miles circumnavigating the volcanic lands and forests surrounding the squat, smoldering Mt St. Helens. It was amazing, but I cannot rightly recommend this route to others. The June Lake trailhead Not because it's not beautiful, mostly fun, diverse in ecosystems, and full of fascinating wildlife. It is all of those things. But it is also full of washouts and utterly terrifying descents, ascents, and traverses on huge dunes of kitty-litter-esque scree. Starting on Loowit (from June Lake) Granted, I have a particular fear of scree washouts after our Mt Hood circ attempt. But some of these washouts were incredibly precarious. Each foot placement had to be strategized and the few rocks to hold on to often came away in the sandy scree, sending an avalanche of gravel  and dust down the side of the slope, the sound of which reminds one what will happen...

2023 - The Year of Type 2 Fun

Before we dive in let's level-set on the fun scale. Many outdoor enthusiasts use it to measure the type of fun they have or have had. Here are the different levels of fun ( borrowed from REI ): Type 1 Fun: Enjoyable while it's happening. It's straightforwardly fun and pleasurable. Type 2 Fun: Not necessarily enjoyable in the moment but becomes fun in retrospect or when sharing the story with others. Type 3 Fun: Not fun at the time and not fun in retrospect, but often leads to personal growth or a sense of achievement. 2023 started as type 3 fun for me. I was dealing with the loss of my mom, working for a toxic, gaslighting boss, and then losing my job at the end of January. I wasn’t upset about losing my job– it was an awful situation– but that is a story for another time. I was not excited about looking for a job when almost every tech company laid off folks.
